In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, the main character claims that “nothing [is] your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull.” This diary will represent your mind throughout our reading of the book. Think of this as a way to hold all of the information about the government/party that you wouldn’t want them to see. This assignment will count for about 50% of your grade throughout the reading of 1984, so losing your notebook is the equivalent to falling victim to Big Brother and losing your mind.
What your diary should include:
- Notes provided by Mr. Quillen during class or online
- Terms from the book
- any words/terms you’re unfamiliar with; “INGSOC,” “Ministry of Truth,” “Newspeak,” etc.
- Discussion questions for Socratic circles
- Journal Entries – Responses to writing prompts given in class or online
***General thoughts/notes as you read are not required but are very encouraged***
